Crafting Unique Spaces with Crystal Clear Excellence

CKB offers Crystal Cabinet Works cabinetry which is quite simply the highest quality custom cabinetry made in the US. Barb has been a leader in sustainable interior design since 2004 and enjoys creating rooms for people that appreciate at least a slightly artistic approach. She doesn’t have a set style. Instead, Barb likes to work with clients to design rooms that suit each client whether they are classic, fun or glamorous.

Meet Barb Dornbush

Barbara Book Dornbush was born in Ann Arbor to parents who wanted to live on the East Coast. So, Barb grew up spending summers on the Jersey shore in a very arts-oriented family and still loves both art and nature. Her mother lived in Princeton, NJ, but owned a Haitian art gallery in New Hope, PA. Her father lived in New York City where she frequented the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. When it came time to select a college, she chose UM in Ann Arbor (much to her parents’ surprise). Then she fell for a young man from the South, and they moved to Atlanta.

After her first career teaching managerial sciences at business schools, Barb had her mid-life crisis and decided to go to art school and study interior design. Upon graduating she immediately opened the Dornbush Design Studio in 2004 focused on sustainable residential interiors because, although she loved creating beautiful spaces, she was concerned about the impact of the home furnishings industry on the planet and those who live on it.

CKB About 2

Barb won the first ASID Design Excellence Award for Sustainable Design in Georgia, has published in several magazines, has given talks to groups, such as Georgia Organics and the Art Institute of Atlanta, and served on the program committee of the IFDA’s national conference to bring information about sustainability to more designers. She has also been a guest on “The Lazy Environmentalist” on Sirius Radio.

In 2020 she launched a website-based business, Eco Rooms, to bring more information about sustainable residential design and products to the public. When she and her husband decided to move back to Michigan (with a bit of help from their daughter who lives in Lansing), they chose Grand Rapids for its vibrant art scene and proximity to nature.

As Barb started to look for work here, she was surprised that no-one in Grand Rapids was offering Crystal Cabinetry. Crystal encouraged her to open a showroom and Campau Kitchen & Bath was born. Although she always loved French design and food, Barb never knew she had French roots when she was growing up, so she chose to honor her French ancestors by naming the showroom after them.
